 McTimoney Spinal Manipulation

The History Of McTimoney Chiropractic

The McTimoney College of Chiropractic in Oxford carries on the work developed by the late John McTimoney. He applied his human chiropractic techniques to animals.  The McTimoney College of Chiropractic is the first college in Britain to provide a validated Post Graduate Diploma course in Animal Manipulation, only open to Human Chiropractors or Graduates of Animal or Equine Sciences.

Like people, animals suffer from back, neck, pelvic and musculoskeletal problems and, like us, they can benefit from McTimoney manipulation. For more than forty years, McTimoney chiropractors have been helping horses, dogs, cats, farm animals and even some "exotics" with a non-invasive technique which involves no drugs or anesthetics and which most animals accept quite readily.

The McTimoney Animal Treatment is a safe, gentle but effective whole body manipulative therapy. The treatment is based on the fact that every function of every cell, tissue, organ and system of the body is controlled by the nervous system. This nervous system is governed by the brain, which lies protected in the skull from which the spinal cord exits and runs within protective vertebrae throughout the length of the horses back. Between each vertebra is a joint, giving your animals back some flexibility. Importantly, peripheral nerves leave and enter the spinal cord between these vertebral joints. When those bones lose their normal position or are restricted in movement, they can interfere with normal nerve function, causing malfunction of the particular tissue they are innovating. This could be anything from digestive function to skeletal muscle function and range from subtle changes to severe. Pain will also be felt in the area of the misaligned joint.

McTimoney manipulation aligns and balances the animal's musculoskeletal and nervous systems. By manipulating any misaligned joints throughout the whole body, with special attention to the spine and pelvis, it helps both to restore and maintain health, soundness and performance. It works holistically to eliminate the cause, not just to treat the symptoms.
